Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 2, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how HUDSON BARRY RESEARCH LLC ("we," "us," or "our"), developer of SATWIP (the "App"), handles information in connection with your use of the App. We are committed to protecting your privacy.
1. Information We Collect
SATWIP collects a limited amount of personal information, as described in the sections below. In all other respects:
- We do not use tracking technologies such as cookies, analytics pixels, or telemetry beacons within the App.
- All screening criteria, saved results, and preferences are stored locally on your own device and are never transmitted to us.
2. Email Verification
Before using the App, you are required to verify your email address using a one-time code sent to that address. If you configure a different email address for your SEC API Identity, that address must also be verified separately.
During email verification, your email address is transmitted to our authentication service, which creates a persistent user record containing your email address and a timestamp. Our authentication service uses a third-party email delivery provider to send the verification code to your address; that provider receives your email address solely for that purpose. A session credential is stored locally on your device after successful verification so the App can re-authenticate you automatically at startup.
3. Disclaimer Acceptance Log
The App displays a disclaimer that must be acknowledged before the App can be used. The first time each account accepts the disclaimer (and again if the disclaimer is updated), the following information is transmitted to and stored in our private database:
- Your name and email address (as entered during App setup)
- The date and time of acceptance
- The App version and disclaimer version number
This record is retained for compliance purposes and is not shared with any third party. The database is configured so that stored records cannot be read, modified, or deleted by any external party — only the developer has access. Data is transmitted over HTTPS.
4. Third-Party Services
The following table summarises the third-party services that receive personal information from the App, and why.
| Recipient | What is sent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SEC EDGAR | Your SEC API Identity name and email (as a User-Agent header); company CIK numbers |
Required by the SEC's fair-use policy for API access (see note below) |
| Our authentication service | Email address | Email verification (section 2); stores a persistent user record |
| Our email delivery provider | Email address | Delivers the one-time verification code to your inbox |
| HUDSON BARRY RESEARCH LLC | Name, email, timestamp, App and disclaimer version | Disclaimer acceptance log (section 3) |
Note on Direct Fetch vs. Fast Fetch: In Direct Fetch mode, every screening request is sent to SEC EDGAR with your SEC API Identity. In Fast Fetch mode (Premium), the screening data itself is downloaded from our own server, so the screen does not contact SEC EDGAR. A few features contact SEC EDGAR directly in either mode and therefore transmit your SEC API Identity: loading the ticker suggestion list, Company Details > Load Financials, and looking up a company's CIK after importing a CSV.
SATWIP also queries Yahoo Finance and Nasdaq to retrieve share price and market capitalisation data, and downloads Nasdaq Trader's public symbol directories to identify security types. These requests include only ticker symbols (or no query at all) and no personal identifying information. With SATWIP Premium, the Fast Fetch feature downloads pre-computed screening data from our server and, if that server is unreachable, from a backup snapshot, and Company Details retrieves a company's business description from our server. These requests identify at most the company being looked up and include no personal identifying information. In addition, your device's IP address is inherently transmitted to every service the App connects to as a technical requirement of internet communication.
The SEC's own privacy and data policies govern the EDGAR API. You can review those at www.sec.gov/privacy.
5. Information Stored on Your Device
All other data created or saved by SATWIP is stored locally on your device only:
- Windows:
C:\Users\<you>\.satwip\ - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/SATWIP/
Data stored here includes:
- Your account name and email address
- Your profile name(s)
- Your SEC API Identity name and email (stored per profile; may differ from your account credentials)
- Notes, BUY/HOLD/SELL signals, and comments you write for individual companies
- Custom filter sets you save for reuse
- Tickers you have marked as dropped
- A session credential (refresh token) that lets the App re-authenticate you automatically at startup (see section 2)
- The disclaimer text you accepted and its version number
Your account and settings files in this folder are encrypted on disk, as are account files exported with the Premium export feature. One file is stored unencrypted: a cache of public market symbol data (security_names.json — ticker symbols and security names downloaded from Nasdaq Trader) that contains no personal information. CSV files you explicitly save from the App (screen results, financials, capital-allocation tables) are ordinary unencrypted files written to the location you choose.
Except as described above, none of this information is uploaded, synced, or transmitted to any party.
6. Information Not Collected
SATWIP does not collect or transmit:
- Usage analytics or telemetry
- Crash reports
- Advertising identifiers
- Location data
- Financial account numbers or brokerage credentials
- Payment information
7. App Stores
SATWIP is distributed through the Microsoft Store (Windows) and the Apple Mac App Store (macOS). Microsoft and Apple may each collect diagnostic, usage, and purchase information as part of their respective platforms. This data is collected by Microsoft or Apple, not by us, and is governed by their own privacy policies.
8. Children's Privacy
SATWIP is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from children.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
